Writing Program faculty Jeffery Hanson and Madeleine Sorapure Support Graduate Students and Postdocs with Workshops

Writing Program faculty led two important workshops for graduate students and postdocs winter quarter. Jeffery Hanson’s workshop, “Captivating an Audience with Your Research Story,” focused on taking a “story-based” approach to explaining a research topic. The workshop was open to all fields and disciplines. The goal was to work on shorter presentations directed towards a general audience. Professor Hanson, who has been teaching oral and written communication to both graduate and undergraduate students for over 25 years, lent his expertise as he favors a simple approach that employs various techniques for effective and engaging presentations. Similarly Writing Program Director, Madeleine Sorapure, conducted “Workshops on Fundamental Slide Design,” which focused on designing effective PowerPoint presentations. Professor Sorapure is co-director of the Multimedia track for the Professional Writing Minor and teaches courses in new media and digital composing. The workshops discussed how to use graphics, color, and text in creating slides that enhance presentations.
