Join us for a special celebration honoring Dr. Sarah Hirsch the 2021 recipient of the Charles Bazerman Endowed Faculty Fellowship for Professional Writing Development.

Event held on zoom. Passcode: 560121

Dr. Hirsch’s research, entitled “Decoding the ‘X’: The Intersection of Visual Rhetoric and Materiality in New Orleans,” explores the rhetorical work the sprayed painted X, known as the Katrina Cross, is doing in New Orleans and all the complexities of a city. Her research looks at the communities especially vulnerable to the effects of climate change, which in turn expose the city’s sociopolitical inequities. Decoding the X reveals its consequentiality: rhetorically, visually, and materially in a place in which the X circulated extensively.

This endowed fellowship has been made possible by the generosity of Charles Bazerman, Professor of Education of the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
