Entry Level Writing Requirement FAQ

Q: How do I “sign up” for Writing Placement 2020?

A: You’ll receive an email from placement@writing.ucsb.edu around the time of your freshman orientation session with more information about the placement process.

Q: I’m still a little confused about the structure of Writing Placement 2020. Is it an exam? What are the questions going to look like?

A: Writing Placement 2020 is not an exam but a placement process. You will start by learning about the reading and writing assignments in Writing 1 and Writing 2. Your placement in either course will be determined by a Placement Survey about your writing experiences. A typical question will involve looking at a writing assignment frequently used in our courses and asking about your experience with similar assignments.

Q: What if I think the course I’m placed in isn’t the best fit for me?

A: If you would like your placement to be reconsidered, you can register for the Placement Review in which you’ll provide an academic writing sample from a previous course and explain what you think it demonstrates about your writing abilities.

Q: I have completed the online AWPE on June 20, but I haven't heard back about my scores. How can I find out more information?

A: The UCSB Writing Program isn’t directly involved in the administration of the online AWPE exam. You’ll need to contact the AWPE administrators directly for answers to these questions. You can find their information on the following website.

Q: I’m going to be a sophomore/junior/senior in Fall 2020, and I have yet to fulfill the ELWR requirement. Can I complete Writing Placement 2020 this summer?

A: If you haven’t yet fulfilled the ELWR requirement, you will be contacted about taking Writing Placement 2020 during the academic year. We will offer Writing Placement 2020 in Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters. Check our website for more information.

Q: I am an incoming international freshman. Should I take the Writing Placement 2020?

A: Incoming international freshmen should take the online EMS Program English Language Placement 2020, which will be administered in August. For more information, see the EMS Program website. After July 1st, you can also check the Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) website for information.

Q: Will I be able to register for a Fall 2020 Writing Program course if I haven’t received a placement before my freshmen orientation session?

A: Writing Placement 2020 won’t be live until early July, so you might not receive test scores before your orientation session. If you’re not able to register for Writing 1 or Writing 2 during orientation, you might be able to get into a course during Pass 3. However, you don’t need to take a Writing Program course before Spring 2021, and you should be able to get into the appropriate Writing Program course during your first year.
