First Week

  • On the (business) day before classes begin, your First Day Packet will be in your mailbox.
    It will contain:
    —Add codes for classes
    —Writing Program Policies and Procedures
—Writing Program sheet for crashers & sheet for prerequisite checks
    —Drop deadline flyer
—Office keys; also, Lab/Conference Room/Copier codes
  • By the first day of classes your class will be closed to GOLD (unless otherwise stated on your class list.) This means you control whatever space is available. (Maximum enrollment for all writing courses is 25, except for ACE, which is 18.)
  • Instructors maintain waiting lists. The WP staff will refer all students to you until you tell us that your class is full or you're no longer accepting students on your waiting list. Engineering classes (1E, 2E, 50E) are the exception, with waiting lists managed by the undergraduate advisor.
  • All students petitioning for enrollment must be checked for prerequisites. Use the pre-requisite sheet in the First Day Packet to list student names, etc. which you are considering for enrollment and give to Undergraduate Advisor as soon as possible after your first class. WP staff will check on all students and return the form by your 2nd class meeting.
  • If a student does not attend the first day of class, and does not contact you regarding the absence, you may give his/her space away to a student trying to "crash". At the end of class on Day #1, you may use your class list to cross out the names of students who are not present, and return it to the undergraduate Advisor. You may then issue the Add codes to fill the empty seats
  • Please reinforce the information about the WP's drop policy (for lower-division classes) to your students. After the deadline, a written petition addressed to the Director of the Writing Program is required. Refer students to the WP main office, South Hall 1520.
  • Print updated class lists from eGrades (https://egrades.sa.ucsb.edu) whenever you would like to check on drops and new enrollments.
  • If possible, get phone numbers and/or e-mails addresses for all students on your waiting list.

Second Week & Third Week
  • Make sure every "body" is accounted for. If someone is regularly attending your class but not on the class list, they are not officially enrolled. If s/he is not enrolled, no grade can be recorded.
