Communication
  • Please check your e-mail and mailbox frequently. These are the primary ways the WP staff and students communicate with you.
  • If you want to e-mail Writing Program instructors (Ladder faculty, LSOE, Lecturers, Associates & TAs) or staff, the following is a list of Program aliases:
    1. wpfac@writing.ucsb.edu (all Program instructors)
    2. wplec@writing.ucsb.edu (Program Ladder faculty, LSOE, Lecturers)
    3. wpta@writing.ucsb.edu (Program Associates and TAs)
    4. wpace@writing.ucsb.edu (ACE instructors)
    5. wpengr@writing.ucsb.edu (Engineering instructors)
    6. wpstaff@writing.ucsb.edu (all staff)
  • If you are ill and need to cancel class, you must e-mail or phone the WP office. (If you e-mail, please send the message via the alias: wpstaff.) We will post a canceled sign on your class door. Be sure to include any instructions you want given to your students.
Note TAs: You must also inform your supervisor if you cancel class (other than for illness). Discuss with him/her the most appropriate way to make up course work (e.g. substitute instructor, make-up class, etc.)

  • Speaking with parents: Occasionally parents will call instructors wanting to know how their son or daughter is doing academically or to discuss a specific academic situation. Please explain that state and federal law prohibit faculty (and staff) from releasing any information related to a student's academic performance. If needed, you can refer them to the Writing Program Director, (805) 893-2613, or Dean Wyner, (Dean for Undergraduate Studies), (805) 893-3006.

If a parent calls because a student is ill and wants to discuss accommodations (incomplete, withdrawal, etc) get the relevant facts and tell him/her you need to consult with your supervisor, Director, or Program office and will call back. Depending on the student's situation, appropriate responses will be different.
