As Goes California, So Goes the Nation

This course will focus on California –its culture, economics, politics and population.  We will first explore how California and Californians are portrayed in movies, television shows, and literature. Next, we will study and discuss the political and financial issues of California.  Finally, we will consider the deepening diversity within the state.  According to the 2006 Census Bureau population estimate, California is home to the largest numbers of the two fastest-growing racial groups, Latinos and Asians.  How does this affect the politics, education and economy of our state?  You will be asked to produce a research proposal of your topic, an annotated bibliography that documents your research, an audio/visual presentation of your research to benefit and inform your peers in terms of your project, and a final comprehensive research paper of your chosen subject.  We will emphasize the reading, thinking, and writing skills involved in independent research including developing questions, designing and planning research, analyzing, contrasting and synthesizing multiple sources and drawing conclusions.  By the end of this course, students will have gained critical skills for conducting research as well as have gained a deepened understanding of the state in which they live.
