About the Annual Letter Exchange

For the past two years, the UCSB Writing Programís Writing Everywhere Collective has coordinated a letter exchange between college students and middle school students from RJ Frank Intermediate School in Oxnard, CA.Initially an outgrowth of the NCTE National Day of Writing, the exchange provided not only an opportunity to show how writing is a part of every aspect of our lives, but a valuable chance for communication.Middle school students were able to ask questions of the college students, and vice versa.

The letter exchange culminates with a celebration dinner bringing the writers together, featuring readings by student writers.

In addition to letters being posted on the Writing Everwhere site, students also had the opportunity to post their letters on the National Day of Writing Gallery site, creating an additional public audience for their writing.

The success of the exchange in 2009 and 2010 has already led to a planned continuation of the project for the 2011-2012 school year.
