Course Description: The course will explore the relation between the writings of Charles Darwin and the development of the novel in the second half of the nineteenth century. Readings will include selections from Darwin’s most important works, The Origin of Species and The Descent of Man, as well as novels representing a variety of reactions to Darwin’s theories.

Requirements: A quiz, three short essays, and a final exam.
