Michael Petracca teaches the creative nonfiction sequence, Writing for the
Social Sciences (109SS), Writing for Education (109ED), Writing about Film (109F), and other
research-related courses. Petracca is co-author of Common Culture: Reading
And Writing About American Popular Culture and other novels, textbooks,

Madeleine Sorapure directs the Multimedia Communication track
of the Professional Writing Minor, and she teaches Writing in New Media

Linda Adler-Kassner will join the Writing Program in Fall 2010 as Professor and
Director, when she will teach undergraduate and graduate courses. She is author,
co-author, or co-editor of several books, including The Activist WPA: Changing
Stories about Writing and Writers, Basic Writing as a Political Act: Public
Conversations about Writing and Literacy, and Questioning Authority: Stories
Told in School. She has also published numerous articles and book chapters on
writing program administration, pedagogy, and public policy and writing instruction. Through 2011, Linda is also President of the Council of Writing Program Administrators.

Nicole Archambeau teaches Writing 2LK (History) in the Writing Program.
In the History Department, she teaches medieval and world history courses.
Lisa Avery teaches a variety of courses in the Writing Program. Her scholarly interests include
examining the connections between space, narrative, and experience in popular cultural texts;
WAC pedagogy and curriculum; and technology and pedagogy.
Katie Baillargeon teaches Writing 1, 2, 2LK with Music, and 50.
Mashey Bernstein teaches Writing 1, Writing 50 (Vietnam War), 109V,
Magazine Writing, 109HU and 2LK linked with Film Studies and Music.
He also takes a class to the Telluride Film Festival every Labor Day
(FMS119.) He co-chairs the Writing One Committee and administers the
AWPE exam. He has published extensively on various aspects of the media.
Norman Douglas ("Doug") Bradley teaches a variety of courses at UCSB, with an emphasis on STEM (science, technology,
engineering, and medicine) subject matter: Writing 1/1E, 2/2E, 50/50E, 109ST, 109HP. He also teaches writing at

Ljiljana Coklin teaches Writing 50 and 109EC.
Craig Cotich teaches Grammar and Stylistics, Professional Editing, Writing for the Teaching Professions,
Business Writing, as well as a range of academic writing courses. Specializing in two areas within the
UCSB Writing Program, he directs the Professional Editing track of the minor and chairs the ACE program.
Christopher Dean has been a writing teacher since 1993, and he has been teaching
college composition since 1996. He teaches Writing 1 and Writing 2 in the ACE sequence,
Writing 50, Writing 109SS, Writing 109ED, Writing 501A, and Writing 501B.
He has a Ph.D. from the University of New Hampshire in Composition and Rhetoric,
and is a terrible guitarist and an even worst pianist.
Auli Ek currently teaches Writing 2 (Academic Writing) and Writing 50 (Writing and the Research Process).
Her teaching and research interests include interdisciplinary approaches to race, gender, sexuality, and
social and criminal justice. Her publications include Race and Masculinity in Contemporary American
Prison Narratives (Routledge 2005).
Gina L. Genova, Esq. has taught Writing 1 but predominately lectures in
Writing 50 (Great American Trials), Writing 109EC, Writing 109L and Writing
110L. Ms. Genova has been a member of the California State and Federal Bars
since 1992 and maintains a local legal practice specializing in contract,
small business and personal injury law.
Leslie Hammer currently teaches Writing 1, Writing 2, and Writing 50. She comes from UC San Diego, where she
taught a variety of writing and literature courses. Her scholarly interests include sentimental
rhetoric, composition studies, gender studies, nineteenth-century US literature, and US women's writings.
Jeffrey Hanson teaches professional writing courses related to domestic and
global careers. Through his joint appointment in the ESL/Linguistics
Program, he also teaches graduate-level communication courses for
international students. His academic background includes numerous conference
presentations and four years of teacher-training abroad--in Estonia,
Hungary, Russia, and Saudi Arabia--under the U.S. State Department. He
received UCSB's Distinguished Teaching Award in 2007.
Peter Huk teaches Writing 1, 2, 2E, 50, 109GS, 109HU, and the ACE sequence.
Jennifer Johnson teaches Writing 1, Writing 2 (both in and outside the ACE
Program), Writing 109 AC, 109 SS, and 109 EC. Jennifer is currently working
on a dissertation to finish her Ph.D. in Composition at Indiana University
of Pennsylvania. Her current research interests include the training and
preparation of teachers of composition, genre theory, and the relationship
between composition and literary studies.
Robert Krut teaches Writing 1 and 2 (with the ACE Program), 50 (with a focus on "Cultural Groundbreakers"),
109EC, 109F, and works extensively with Outreach. His writing has appeared in a number of literary journals,
and his book, The Spider Sermons, will be released in 2009.
LeeAnne G. Kryder directs the Business Communication track of the
Professional Writing Minor, and teaches professional writing (business,
environmental, and managerial) at UCSB, in the Writing Program and
Training & Development. Prior to teaching at UCSB, Dr. Kryder worked in
the computer field as a manager, systems analyst, and technical writer.
She serves as a campus .change agent. for sustainability.
Brian Loftus teaches Writing 1, the entire engineering series, and Writing 109V.
Teddy Macker teaches in the Writing Program and the College of Creative Studies.
Among his honors is the Reginald S. Tickner Fellowship of the Gilman School in
Baltimore. His work appears in Antioch Review, New Letters, Orion, and elsewhere.

Susan McLeod's scholarship includes 7 books and numerous articles on writing
across the curriculum, writing program administration, and the teaching of

Ilene Miele teaches Writing 109ED, Writing 1 & 2, and ACE courses. She is a
TA supervisor and edits Starting Lines. A fellow with the South Coast
Writing Project, her teaching interests include school/university outreach,
student publication, and the intersections between composition and creative
writing pedagogy. Her publications include feature and news writing, short
fiction, and creative non-fiction.
Janet Mizrahi teaches primarily upper division courses that focus on
professional writing: 109EC, 109HP,110MK, and 109JW. Prior to teaching
at UCSB, Janet was a features writer at the Los Angeles Daily News, a marcom
writer for a Santa Barbara software firm, and managing editor of
medically-oriented web sites.
Kathy Patterson teaches Writing 1, 50, 109SS and 109HU.
Jon teaches 109EC: Writing for Business and Economics, Writing 2LK, and Writing 1.
His background is in academic administration as well as the teaching of literature
and writing. His literature interests include the English Romantics,
the fin de siecle, and early-modern literature. He earned a bachelor's degree
from San Diego State University and a Ph.D. from UC Riverside.
Cissy Ross has taught Writing 1, 2 and Writing 50. She received her
doctorate in education in 2008. Prior to that, she worked as a journalist.
Her research has explored student writing in Environmental Studies as well
as media reports on SAT testing. Her editing work won a New York Times
chairman's award for environmental reporting.
Amanda Stansell Writing 2LK with Sociology, 109ED, 109CS, and the E sequence.
Nick Tingle has taught writing at UCSB since 1980. He is the author of Self
Development and College Writing, NCTE, 2004. He has published on writing
pedagogy most especially in College English, JAC, Composition Studies, The
Journal of Psychoanalytic Studies, and Studies in Psychoanalytic Theory. Visit his

Gina Vallis regularly teaches Writing 1, 2, 50, 109V, 109F, and has
taught Writing 105RW and 109EC. She holds a Ph.D. in Literature from
UCSC.
As a Continuing Lecturer, Roy Vallis teaches Writing 1, 2, 50, Writing about Film
(109F), Writing for the Humanities (109HU), and, in 2006, he designed, and
currently teaches, Writing 105 Rhetoric and Writing (105RW). He received his
Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Film from U.C. Berkeley, where he also completed his B.A.
in English, with an emphasis in Medieval Studies.
