University of California Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE)

The Analytical Writing Placement Exam is given to all students to determine placement in either Writing 1 or Writing 2.


The next on-campus sitting of the AWPE:

When: January 22, 2010 (Friday), 8:00-10:00 am

Where: South Hall 1431

Bring a pen and photo ID.

  1. Do I need to register for the exam?
  2. It is not necessary to register for this exam.
  3. Do I need to pay for the exam in advance?
  4. No, you do not have to pay for the exam in advance or on the day of the exam. You will be given a payment voucher and an envelope at the exam, to send in your payment.
  5. How much does the exam cost?
  6. The cost for this exam is $65.00.
  7. How often is the exam offered?
  8. The exam is offered once every quarter around the beginning of the quarter.
  9. What do I do if I miss the exam?
  10. Take it next quarter. There are no make-up exams.
  11. Do I have to take the AWPE or can I just take Writing 1
  12. You must take the AWPE.
  13. I recently took the exam. How can I find out my score?
  14. Exams are processed soon after the exam takes place. Your score will be uploaded to the registrar within approximately 3 days following the exam. Scores are posted by perm number outside of the Writing Program office once they are processed. A score from 2 to 6 indicates placement in Writing 1. A score of 8 to 12 indicates placement in Writing 2.
